Infinite USB Plug

Endagadget reports that a Chinese design student Gonglue Jiang has shown a new way to overcome the limitations imposed by the scarcity of USB ports on some computers. There’s no need to hot swap devices into a single port.

This looks cool, but you’ve got to be careful about devices that are powered from the USB port. The more you plug in, the more current they will suck out of your poor computer. Also, as you connect devices to a bus, signal degradation occurs which is why USB hubs with active electronics to retransmit signals over each port are commonly used. Still, as someone who frequently bends the rules, you can probably get the most common devices to work for your typical laptop users using this little cheat. Buyer beware!

I think it’s just a concept at the moment – nothing materialized yet.
However, he has also come up with an external power connector that joins on:

It’s cool but like Dave says, it’s usb powered which means it could easily fail on you

The external power connector MK mentions would solve that problem. You still have an issue with dragging down the communications signals, but I’m guessing that the primary market for this is laptop users with a small handful of peripherals. I’d love to play with one of these.
