Surviving in the recession

You don’t have to tell anyone. They know your business is going through some rough times. That’s really a nasty situation to be in. But what can you do? You’re part of one big phenomenon. So what are you going to do? Are you just going to close your business and open it up when everything’s clear?

You’re in for a treat because I have a few tips to help you make your business stay afloat in this time of recession.

Make your business as visible as possible.

As a small company, you probably don’t have the means to really do some neat advertising like other bigger companies do, but that doesn’t mean you should not at least try.
When the economy plummets, you have to work a little harder to make sure people notice you. It is very easy for a small business to be left out and go unnoticed especially during an economic recession. Be creative. Ask your friends. Use whatever resources you have to tell the market that you’re still up and running.

Try new things

This should be the right time for you to consider doing other things. Enter into the unknown. You might consider changing your product or your marketing strategies. You might also want to find more inspiration and brainstorm with your team.

Be humble and learn from other companies. There must be at least one out there that’s doing the right thing. Don’t copy, but you can always learn more ways of being creative.

The thing is, you can’t afford to wait for your customers to come to you. Go and find them. Use your skills.

Sell your strengths

Know what your strength as a business is, and then build on it. Focus on your strength. Use it to connect more with your customers. If it’s your product, then work on improving it. If it’s customer service, then make it more intimate and give the best service you can give. Now is not the time to get distracted. You have to be alert at the shifts in the trends and in the supply and demand.

A simple truth about recession

Fact: recession comes and goes. It’s like the seasons. You have spring, then you have summertime, fall comes shortly after that, and then you finally shiver in the cold of winter. After that what happens? Spring comes back in, and the endless cycle runs its course.

Look it up in the pages of history, recessions have always come and gone. Before there was no recession. The economy was faring really well. Businesses thrived. The rate of unemployment went down. People can buy anything they want. But now is the time of recession. We can see and feel only the opposite of what we had before.

The point here is to be ready whenever recession comes back. I’m not saying that you be paranoid about it. Just be ready. Keep it in mind. Study the trends. Consult economists. Be in the know.

Your thoughts

What about you? Is your business sorely affected by the recession we are experiencing right now? How are you doing so far? What have you done to handle this normal course of economic shifts and changes? What other things would you like to share or add?
