How to properly set deadlines.

You have a lot of deadlines to meet and projects to complete. You hate it when things happen that cause delays. That is a very frustrating situation to be in. So how do you set proper deadlines so that you mitigate the possibility of you caught up in hassles or problems with your time?

Here are a few tips that you could use:

Knowledge is everything.

Knowing everything that needs to be done on the project is essential in this issue. See to it that you and the client agree to everything that has to be done in writing before you even start to think about schedules.

Pacing is important

It’s always noble to strive to finish before the set deadline. As humans we always want to be faster and finish strong. But like I said, it’s also helpful if you know your own pacing. You can only do so much. You can always learn something and improve in the future. But be realistic with your capacities and strengths at this present time.

Be realistic in setting your deadlines.

It’s always good to be positive and optimistic in your business, but not in setting deadlines. The worst thing that you can do is to be an optimist when planning deadlines. If you see a possible trouble, plan for it to happen. It’s far better to be “surprised” when bad things don’t happen than when they do happen.

Know every detail

Have firsthand knowledge as much as you can. Communicate with your clients. Getting to know the client a little bit can be helpful in not only deciding whether or not you want to work with them, but also for getting a feel of their preferences. There’s no such thing as getting too much information about the client and the project.

Know the nature of your project.

Look it up. Research on what usually happens in the process of completing the project. What things occur and what to expect in the process.

Plan to the smallest detail.

You could see yourself as someone really paranoid. I know how it feels. Of course it’s impossible for you to know all the details… some of them didn’t happen yet. But what I’m trying to say is prepare for it. Ask your friends in the same industry. Ask them what to expect.

Know yourself.

Just accept who you are and be honest. Being realistic with our abilities and work paces is incredibly important when creating deadlines. It always pays to know what you’re capable of doing so that it will allow you to only pick clients that really fit your field of expertise, and allows you to gauge the time needed to work on the project.
